Is your business lost in The Matrix?
Customers come in all shapes and sizes, technological aptitudes, and business types. What I have found is that speaking a common language to business owners is very tough and getting past gatekeepers to the business owner is nearly impossible, especially when you tell them you are contacting them in relation to their Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
SEO sounds like a foreign term to many people, almost like another language altogether. To make matters worse, there are hundreds of foreign companies who claim to be SEO experts that flood email inboxes or Twitter feeds. Trust me we know how frustrating it can be we get the same solicitations daily from these foreign companies and we are a professional SEO company.
The second truth about these supposed SEO companies is that there are an abundance of SEO professionals that accept big contracts for services then engage the contracting business in Search Engine Marketing (SEM) or pay-per-click (PPC) advertising instead of true SEO. The problem with this is that SEM is a short-term campaign that can be expensive if not managed properly. The misleading factor for this situation is that SEM generates leads quickly but the ads are short lived once your budget is gone and these campaigns leave no web imprint at all.
I completely understand how this could all be confusing for business owners. So when I am consulting with a client new to the SEO world I practice extreme patience and ensure I cover all levels of the entire SEO process with them. SEO is a process of developing your online presence in all related keywords that takes time to fully appreciate but is worth the investment in terms of long-term success.
The largest barrier I see with business owners is that many believe that simply having a website that is operational means that people are going to find them. This can be true with very niche markets where there are no competitors but this is the exception not the rule. This misunderstanding is not just isolated to small business owners because there are national franchises that have a national website with little to no value added in terms of search engine optimization. The result is that local businesses that are optimized will dominate search results and the non-optimized companies will end up spending more money in traditional advertising dollars unnecessarily.
Why do business owners accept this as a fact of life?
This question reminds me of the movie "The Matrix", specifically the scene where Agent Smith is explaining how there were several versions of the Matrix that were perfect societies and the human minds rejected them. I believe this is true for SEO services as well where business owners cannot fathom a world where their business thrives and is optimized to show up in Google searches page 1 for all their products and services.
I once went through one management course they taught us that there are several levels of people in all groups
The fact is that some people are content with where there business is currently and these people are content with not being cutting edge. This is acceptable short-term but if your business is to survive the long haul at some point in today's abundantly connected society you have to make changes to your marketing strategies. The days of Yellow Page ads producing a value-added service for business owners are well behind us. The new frontier is by effectively navigating through the content of the billions of pages that are possible search results for your business online to be found at the top of search engines.
